All aboard for The Big Bus launch

New interactive educational products fills National Curriculum games gap

28 October 2002

The Big Bus, a new educational product for 3 to 11 year olds, is set to plug the education gap in the computer game market, as it is launched across the UK today.

The National Grid for Learning (NGFL) approved product, which is available on CD ROM and via the Internet for use at school and at home, is already inspiring learning with its innovative approach.

The product makers, Imparo, are experts in high quality interactive educational software and The Big Bus has been developed to support the National Curriculum and enhance children's learning.

"Computer based education products can help development of hand-eye coordination, concentration, memory and problem solving, but it can be difficult for schools to adopt games as an approved teaching material," said Ian Goodall, Managing Director of The Big Bus.

"The Big Bus has been developed with childrens education in mind and all activities support the National Curriculum. The Big Bus has already been adopted by primary schools across Buckinghamshire as part of the local councils ICT improvement programme."

A report by Teachers Evaluating Educational Multimedia (TEEM) acknowledged a mismatch between computer games and curriculum content. The research reveals a shortage of computer games with classroom based learning in mind. TEEM Report on the educational use of games 2002

Authors of the TEEM report said: "There is a widely held view that games software is capable of developing strong user engagement and that this can be usefully harnessed in an educational context."

"Games software can be a great forum for learning. Knowledge is developed through the content of the game and skills can be gained as a result of playing the game. However, there is a lack of games content adapted to curriculum needs, which schools and ICT co-ordinators should look to address."

The Big Bus innovative content is aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2. The activities provide younger children with the chance to travel on the virtual Big Bus to Bo Bears World, where they can dress up Bo Bear and learn to count with friendly characters. For older children, Explorers World develops thinking, creativity and logic skills.

The Big Bus products are available to parents, children, primary and pre-schools as subscription based CDs and as an online learning resource. Created by a team of experienced authors, The Big Bus offers top quality UK-focused educational software. All the activities are designed to support the UK schools curriculum.
