No more 'Dog Ate Homework' Excuses!

DTI Award for innovation from Freedom2 which could end pupils' tales

November 2002

"Miss, the dog ate my homework" may soon become a thing of the past!

Freedom2, provider of Intelligent Internet Management solutions for schools, today announced it has a received a DTI Smart Innovation Aaward worth £42,600. The award will enable Freedom2 to carry out a feasibility study for the first automated off site file backup system designed specifically for schools and other educational establishments.

Dog8work will allow schools to manage and safely store all computer files, including pupils' coursework and homework, teachers' notes and course materials. The system could see an end to excuses for 'lost' homework, coursework and other vital notes!

Smart is the DTI's Small Business Service (SBS) initiative. The Smart Award is designed to encourage the development and rapid growth of science and technology-based business by way of product innovation. Smart Aaward grants help small and medium-sized businesses make better use of technology and develop innovative technological products and processes.

The new back-up system will be aimed at schools and colleges, Local Education Authorities and educational supply specialists. Freedom2's experience and knowledge of the network and computer products available to schools led the company to identify the need for an easy-to-use file backup system for all computer files used in a school environment.

Andrew Foyle, CEO of Freedom2, commented: "We strongly believe this innovation will prove a real benefit to schools. Valuable time and money canould be saved if pupils and teachers can easily retrieve work from a back-up service if it is lost or damaged."

"We're very excited about the potential for this new product, and delighted that the DTI has recognised its possibilities and innovative nature." Foyle said.

The principle benefits of the Freedom2 innovation will be:

  • Immediate, reliable and safe back-up of all important course work and teachertutors' files
  • Cost and time savings in avoiding re-writing or recreating lost work
  • Ease of storage and retrieval
  • Peace of mind, as files can be easily retrieved by teachers or pupils
The back-up system is envisaged as a novel extension to Freedom2Teach, the Intelligent Internet and network Mmanagement solution from Freedom2. It will offer simple controls to retrieve stored work that may have been 'mislaid' by a pupil or teacher.

Freedom2 is committed to developing a prototype and conducting a feasibility study to demonstrate how the product will work and where the need for it lies. Freedom2 will present detailed findings to the SBS in 6 months, at which stage the company has the opportunity to be considered for an award of up to £250,000 for developing the product.
