Freedom2Teach makes 'dog-8-my-homework' a thing of the past

January 2003

Freedom2 has much to shout about at BETT 2003, the international event that encourages and extends effective use of ICT in education.

The company will be demonstrating its new Freedom2Teach Intelligent Internet Management solution. Freedom2Teach has been taken up by schools across 16 Local Education Authorities since its launch six months ago. This includes a roll-out of the product among schools and learning centres in Manchester.

The product is building a leading place in the UK IT education market, and was recently chosen as a pilot project by Cumbria Local Education Authority.

Freedom2 will also be unveiling Freedom2Cache, which brings the advantages of web caching (temporary storing of web pages for quick access) and the security of web filtration (barring of certain pages) to internet use in schools.

Freedom2Cache will be demonstrated at BETT for the first time in 2003. The recent launch of the product is an example of the Freedom2's sensitivity to schools' ICT demands within schools Freedom2Cache preceded the recent DfES directive on caching to regional Grids for Learning and Broadband Consortia.

The DfES directive recommended the use of caching solutions in schools, prompted by the realisation that caching plays a vital part in the successful implementation of Broadband in schools, given their high level of internet use. Caching allows faster throughput, because pages do not have to be re-loaded this is particularly useful in group situations, including schools.

Also being celebrated is a £42,000 DTI Smart Award for an innovative new product concept called 'Dog8Work'. The award will enable Imparo to carry out a feasibility study for the first automated, off-site file back-up system designed specifically for schools and other educational establishments.

The off-site back-up system will allow schools to manage and safely store all computer files, including pupils' course work and homework, and well as teachers' notes and course materials. The product could see an end to 'dog-8-my-homework-style excuses for 'lost' homework, coursework and vital notes.

Matt Gray, managing director of Freedom2, commented: "It's been a great year for Freedom2 since BETT 2002, having established an impressive presence in UK schools for Freedom2Teach. We're also very proud to have had our product innovations recognised by the DTI.

"We're looking forward to a successful year ahead, starting with a busy BETT 2003."

Freedom2 will also be informing BETT attendees about its new partnership with Centerprise, the major educational IT provider. Freedom2Teach will form part of Centerprise's BECTA-approved educational system, which includes internet access and management, equipment, networking and managed services.

Freeedom2 is a division of Imparo, the leading provider of high quality, interactive educational products and services.
